Day 5:Cirauqui to Villamayor de Monjardín via Estella

Day five and still alive!

To explain what is happening wih my daily walks I thought today I would start with that. I am using, as a guide, a book of maps (see picture 1 below). So my intention was to do 1 map a day so after 33 days I would be in Santiago. As it turned out I have ended up going past the end of a particular map. So on day 4 I had planned on stopping at Puente La Reina but got there earlier than expected so I walking further to Cirauqui. Hence on day 5, today, instead of stopping at Estella I continued to Villamayor de Monjardín.

So that is why I have ended up using multiple maps. Hopefully that explains things.

Start at the bottom left corner and work up then move to the next row at the bottom and work up and on it goes.

So today I started where the black pen is and finished where the blue pen is.

From this point forward I will just add the maps of my ending village; you’ll know where I started from, if you are following along. 😀

Just outside Cirauqui, part of the route is on a road built by the Romans. In better shape than our modern roads back home!

Leek Soup
Homemade fries with sausage and fried egg
Nice hard cheese topped with apricot purée-simple but delicious

And to cap the night off, because the previous night there was a music festival, they presented a Spanish Wedding for our entertainment!

And it ended at 4am with fireworks 💥 🎆 🎇

Onto day 6.

Those who know me know I love to travel. While the destination is the goal, the real purpose is the journey. Life like how we get somewhere has many ups and downs, but we must not be deflected on our journey.

  3. I love reading your updates, Lawrence. It sounds like you are finding your groove which is great. The photo of you having coffee and a croissant is both comforting and a bit alarming. The look in your eyes is either great relief to get a break or a bit of madness showing up….or maybe both! 🤣 Are there many other pilgrims on the path? How much of your time are you on your own vs. walking with others?

    1. Well Chris, the coffee is usually after 3 hours of hiking so your guess is as good as mine! 😀 wait till you see day 6’s coffee!!!!!!!

      Honestly I still can’t believe I am here. I tend to be walking alone but when I stop all these other pilgrims show up. Connecting with people I am meant to meet and with people who are meant to meet me. We give as much as we get. xo Lawrence
